Jaw Prosthesis

Jaw Prosthesis

A chin implant is designed to create a more defined, balanced and harmonious profile in the lower third of the face. By assessing the nose, lips, chin and neckline together, the aim is to achieve stronger and more aesthetically pleasing facial proportions without altering the face’s natural character.

    What is Jaw Prosthesis Aesthetics?

Jaw prosthesis surgery is a procedure designed to improve the proportions of the lower face by placing specialised medical-grade implants (usually Medpor or silicone) onto the jawbone. The operation aims to achieve the ideal golden ratio between the upper, middle and lower thirds of the face by adding volume to the tip of the chin, either forwards, downwards or outwards.

In Which Situations Is a Jaw Prosthesis Recommended?

    • People with a Receding or Small Jaw (Microgenia): People whose lower jaw is set back when viewed in profile, resulting in distorted facial proportions.
    • Those Whose Noses Appear Larger Than They Actually Are: Patients whose noses appear more prominent and protruding in relation to their faces because the tip of their chin is set back.
    • Those with an undefined neckline: People whose neck angle is unclear due to insufficient jawbone development and who develop a sagging neck at an early age.
    • For those seeking more masculine or defined facial features: Those aiming for a more angular and strong jawline in men, and a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing chin shape in women.
    • Those Seeking Permanent Facial Contour Improvement: Those looking for a lifelong, permanent solution rather than temporary treatments such as chin fillers.

What Types of Prosthetics and Techniques Are Used?

    Selection of Implant Material:

    * Medpor (Porous Polyethylene): This type of implant integrates perfectly with the tissue; blood vessels grow into it, causing it to fuse with the bone. The risk of slippage is virtually zero.

    * Silicone Implants: These are biocompatible prostheses which, thanks to their flexible structure, can be easily inserted through small incisions and are extremely straightforward to remove if necessary.

    Incision Entry Points:

    * Intraoral Incision (Intraoral Approach): This is a method that leaves no external scar. The incision is made in the natural groove between the lower lip and the gum.

    * Submental Incision (Submental Approach): The implant is placed via a small, 2 cm incision made in the natural crease beneath the chin. The scar is extremely discreet and this is the method with the lowest risk of infection.

    How is the operation performed?

The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic plus sedation or general anaesthetic and takes an average of 45–60 minutes.

    • Surgical Planning and Implant Selection: Prior to surgery, the patient’s facial proportions are analysed and an implant of a size and shape suited to their anatomy is prepared.
    • Incision and Pocket Creation: An incision is made either inside the mouth or beneath the jaw, and a precise pocket is created beneath the membrane (periosteum) directly over the jawbone, into which the implant will be placed.
    • Placement and Fixation of the Implant: The implant is placed in the pocket, its symmetry is checked and, if necessary, it is fixed to the bone using micro-screws.
    • Closure: The incisions are closed with cosmetic stitches and a protective medical plaster is applied to the area.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The results of jaw prosthesis surgery are permanent. The medical implants used are not absorbed by the body, do not dissolve and do not change shape over time.

Where Do the Traces Remain, and How Visible Are They?

    • Intraoral Incision: As the incision is made entirely inside the mouth, no surgical scar is visible from the outside.
    • Inferior Jaw Incision: As the incision is made in the crease below the tip of the chin, it is not visible from the outside when the patient is standing. Over time, it blends in with the skin tone and becomes indistinct, appearing as a faint line.

Having Jaw Implant Surgery in Istanbul

Istanbul is one of the leading centres offering advanced surgical approaches to jaw aesthetics and profiloplasty (facial contouring) procedures.

Profileplasty / Combined Surgical Specialism: Surgeons in Istanbul often plan jaw implant surgery in combination with nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) or double chin liposuction to achieve a holistic balance of the facial profile.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the recovery process take?

Following the operation, it is normal to experience swelling and a feeling of tightness at the tip of the jaw for the first 3–4 days. The patient can resume their daily activities within 5–7 days. It is recommended that patients eat soft foods during the first few days whilst the incisions inside the mouth are healing.

Does a denture affect chewing or speaking?

As the implant does not interfere with the chewing muscles or the jaw joint, it does not impair chewing or speech functions.

Can a denture be felt by touch from the outside, or does it slip?

Implants that are positioned and secured in the correct location (under the periosteum) feel just like the person’s own bone tissue once healing is complete; they do not appear or feel artificial when viewed from the outside or touched.
